Bertrand was born and raised in the north of France. At 19, he was enlisted to the French Marines and spent most of his career stationed in the South Pacific.
He visited Australia in 1972 and through his passion for motorcycles, became involved in the first Mad Max movie starring a young Mel Gibson. Bertrand designed all the motorcycles and was also offered a part in the movie.
Bertrand came to Bicheno in 2000 and was overwhelmed by its beauty and friendly people, describing it as “paradise”. He decided this was where he was going to spend the rest of his days.
Bertrand’s burning desire to make a difference led him to local government. He was elected to the Glamorgan Spring Bay Council in 2005 and two years later became Mayor.
During his six years as Mayor, Bertrand has managed to bring the council budget out of deficit and has put Tasmania’s east coast on the map locally, nationally and internationally. Bertrand has proven he tackles the issues ‘head on’ and isn’t afraid to stand up for his patch of paradise.
Bertrand’s achievements have been recognised through a number of accolades, including the Local Government Association of Tasmania Life Members’ Award for Meritorious Service, presented in July 2013.
Bertrand is also a successful businessman and has been running his own enterprise importing motorcycle suspension units for more than 30 years.
