During my years of studying for Applied Science and Education degrees, I developed interests in youth work, student politics and small business which prepared me for my work today.
I commenced a teaching career in local public secondary schools in 1996, specialising in maths, science and IT. Work as a teacher was incredibly satisfying, especially in being a positive influence and support to young people.
I was honoured to be named Tasmanian Young Achiever of the Year for 2002 by the National Australia Day Committee for community work and regional initiative.
I was elected to State Parliament in 2010 having previously served in the Federal Parliament between 2004-07 as a member of the Howard Government and CEO of the Clifford Craig Medical Research Trust from 2007-09.
I value personal integrity, self-discipline and working hard - underpinned by my Christian faith.
My family is the most important part of my life. I am married to Julie, and we have three young children, Eloise, Thomas and James. I want every family in Tasmania to be the best they can be, so am working very hard to help create the right conditions, particularly in the area of education where we have the potential to do so much better as we strive to lead the nation.
