Two George Town companies today announced a manufacturing partnership that otherwise would have seen work outsourced to China.
Bell Bay Aluminium has found a manufacturer in family-run business CPT Engineering.
Over the next four years CPT will supply 13,000 steel-copper anode rods to the smelter; a contract worth $3.7 million.
The smelter is progressively replacing its existing rods as they wear out.
Bell Bay Aluminium general manager Ray Mostogl said the move showed confidence in the capability of Tasmania's manufacturing industry.
He said the company originally thought China would provide the lowest-cost outcome.
CPT's workforce had expanded by three.
