Brian attended Trevallyn Primary School and Riverside High School before graduating from Launceston College in 1993. He obtained a Bachelor of Education at the University of Tasmania in 1997 and a Master of Education in 2004.

Brian is the former Principal of Winnaleah District High School and Branxholm Primary School as well as a member of Learning Services North – Schools Improvement Board. He is the President of the North Eastern Football Union, a member and former committee delegate of the Bridport Golf Club, Trevallyn Tennis Club and Riverside Golf Club.
Brian is also a member of the Australian Education Union and was a teacher at Port Dalrymple School in George Town for seven years before being elected in the electorate of Bass at the State election in 2010. Brian is the Attorney General, Minister for Justice and Minister for Environment, Parks and Heritage and Minister for Education.
Brian is married to Katie and they have two children, William and Beatrix.
