The latest Productivity Commission report on government services found Tasmania spent more than $300 a day per inmate in operating expenditure for 2012-13.
The national average was just over $200.
The total cost, including capital expenditure, for Tasmanian inmates per day was nearly $400 compared to a national average of $300.
The ACT spent the most on prisoners per day overall at more than $400.
