The man and his partner had got into difficulty while swimming at Roaring Beach, on the Tasman Peninsula, about 1.15pm.
Early reports suggested he had become caught in a rip.
Members of the public removed the man from the water and attempted CPR.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter, police and ambulance officers attended the scene, however paramedics were unable to revive the man and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A coroner's report is being completed.
The man's partner was treated for shock before being released.
Tasmania Police are urging all beach users to swim in safe locations, consider their swimming ability before entering the water and be aware of changing beach conditions.
