The 41-year-old died at a house in Pine Avenue shortly before midnight.
He was found in the backyard.
Detective Acting Inspector Craig Joel said: ``The man has been shot and the person or persons responsible have not yet been identified.
``It is not clear at this very early stage of the investigation why the man was shot.''
Key government partners were assisting the investigation, he said.
Police are reassuring residents there is no immediate or ongoing threat to others.
A police command bus will remain in Pine Avenue, Kingston, overnight for people to provide information about last night's fatal shooting.
Detective Acting Inspector Joel said a number of people had come forward with information that police were acting upon, but the person or person's responsible were yet to be found.
``We've got a number of lines of inquiry which we are following and detectives are actively looking at persons of interest, but at this stage, there are no firm suspects,'' Detective Acting Inspector Joel said.
He said it was likely the man who ``is known to police'' had been shot in his backyard, but police were also looking in other areas for evidence.
``There is a wooded reserve that backs on to the property so that is part of our investigation focus and as we speak police officers are conducting a search of that park,'' Detective Acting Inspector Joel said.
``Investigators don't believe that this is a random attack and there is certainly no ongoing threat to the community.''
The police bus and stepped up police control of the area will remain overnight.
People with information can also call Crime Stoppers.
