A 16-YEAR-OLD metal-head walks into a nightclub, and suddenly something clicks. He's instantly spellbound, and utterly blown away by the high- energy house music. He returns to the club on his own every week for six months, transfixed by the phenomenal skills of the resident DJs. Fast forward a few years and he's standing in a crowd of swaying, singing, dancing and smiling young festival goers as juggernaut DJ Deadmau5 spins larger-than-life tunes. "I couldn't stop thinking about how good it would be standing on the other side of the decks and looking out over the massive crowd," Melbourne-born DJ Will Sparks says. The 20-year-old's dreams have well and truly come true. Sparks has a jam-packed schedule in 2014. He has a string of tour dates lined up around Northern America, Europe and Asia. He's locked in a poolside residency at a luxurious Vegas resort, and will celebrate his 21st birthday in March by playing a set at the Electric Daisy Carnival in Mexico. Before he heads off overseas the prodigious young talent will join an impressive list of local and international bands and DJs at the Breath of Life festival in Launceston on Saturday, March 8. Sparks will introduce some, and reintroduce others, to the unmistakable sounds of the Melbourne Bounce. "The Melbourne sound, the bounce, is totally different to other sounds out there," Sparks says. "It's impossible to explain. I suppose it's catchy and boppy, with big build ups and big vocals. Then chuck in some giant drops and off-beat bass lines. But it's also hard, grungy and head banging - for me, at least." Sparks has played to captive audiences in Launceston, Burnie and Hobart in recent months, and is encouraging festival punters to keep an open mind during his set. "You're going to be hearing a lot of tunes you've never heard before," he says. "But it's going to be awesome, we're going to have fun. I can't wait to play for you guys." GIG FACTS WHAT: Breath of Life. WHEN: Saturday, March 8. Gates open at 11am WHERE: Inveresk Showgrounds, Launceston TICKETS: From $129.95 plus booking fee via tickets.breathoflifefestival.com
