GOLFING mecca Barnbougle Dunes has been named the 11th best course in the world. In Golf Digest's first- ever compilation of the world's 100 greatest courses, the sports journal described the Bridport course as "a tremendous 18 in a fantastic stretch of sand dunes along Bass Strait". Rated by 846 golfers worldwide, Barnbougle came out ahead of the iconic Pebble Beach and acclaimed Kingston Health golf courses. Barnbougle owner Richard Sattler said placing higher than the two "household names in golf" was extraordinary. "They're some of the most famed golf courses in the world," he said. "Never in our wildest dreams would we have expected to end up ahead of them." Also polling well in the top-100 was Barnbougle's second course, the "dramatic and unusual" Lost Farm. It was named the 23rd best course in the world. "It's almost unheard of for a location to have two top 50 courses, let alone two in the top 25," Mr Sattler said. "It's just amazing - these are seriously high rankings." Mr Sattler said there would be a lot of people scratching their heads in America after the results were released. "People will be looking for all sorts of reasons to justify why the rankings are all wrong," he said. "We are anything, but the establishment - and let me tell you, the establishment will not be happy." Pine Valley in New Jersey took out the No.1 ranking in the compilation, with Royal Melbourne the only Australian course to finish ahead of Barnbougle, coming in at 9th spot.
