Josef Chromy Wines was awarded the International Trophy for the best in show chardonnay, in the over 15 category, at the 2013 Decanter World Wine awards on Wednesday night.

The awards were held at the Royal Opera House in London and Australian wines dominated, winning six more awards than any other country from the 32 categories.

More than 14,000 wines from 52 countries were judged by experts for the 10th annual Decanter awards.

Josef Chromy's 2011 Chardonnay was made by chief winemaker Jeremy Dineen, who attended the ceremony to accept the trophy.

Vineyard owner Josef Chromy said he was very proud of his team for winning the award.

``Twenty years ago I had a vision to make Tasmanian produce world-class wines,'' Mr Chromy said yesterday.

The vision came to life in 1993 when he bought Rochecombe, before moving on to own Heemskerk, Jansz and Tamar Ridge.

``I was looking for a vineyard I could keep for life,'' Mr Chromy said.

It was then, six weeks after selling Tamar Ridge in 2003, that Mr Chromy bought the Relbia vineyard and started Josef Chromy Wines.

He said the win was his greatest achievement and there was ``no way'' he would sell his multi award-winning winery.

Josef Chromy sales and marketing manager David Milne said the 2011 chardonnay would now only be sold by the bottle from its Relbia cellar door.

``We can't replicate a wine like that, but certainly the 2012 [chardonnay] is a wine made in a similar style and one we have similar hopes for,'' he said.

The  2012 chardonnay was released this week, instead of early next year, as there are only 40 cases of the 2011 chardonnay left.

More than 200 dozen were sold through mail orders in five days, after it won the Decanter World Wine Award's regional trophy in May.

The 2011 chardonnay has won two gold medals and three trophies since its release in April.

It was described by judges of the Decanter World Wine awards as having a great nutty complexity, toasty undertones, juicy lees and intense fruit.
