AFL Tasmania announced yesterday that the Demons would be recognised as a great club this year, with chief executive Scott Wade among those at the Darrel Baldock Oval to share in their prestigious history.
The organisation said that with a population of less than 3000, Latrobe's record of contribution to football was particularly significant, boasting 15 senior premierships, one state flag and a list of illustrious players that had pulled on the navy and red since the club was formed in 1881.
Latrobe will officially take its place in the hall of fame at the induction on July 5 at Wrest Point in Hobart.
Along with regular Tasmanian interstate representatives Joe Murphy, Len Lawson and Vin Waite and dual Wander medallists Bob Hickman and John Jillard, Latrobe has been home to four champions: Ivor Warne-Smith and Darrel Baldock, both highly regarded Australia-wide, and regional champions Harry Coventry and Ellis Maney.
Baldock also achieved All- Australian status in 1971 and retains the distinction of being St Kilda's solitary premiership captain.
Wade said: "It's fantastic to be here in Latrobe immersed in the history of a great club that now takes its rightful place alongside those already honoured by their induction into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame."
