Mixed fortunes for Tassie fighters

Tasmania's best junior amateur boxers enjoyed a mixed day of fortunes on the opening day of competition at the Australian Amateur Boxing titles in Adelaide yesterday.

Latrobe boxer Dylan Cochrane became the state's first winner of the opening day when he beat Pavel Nikiforov, of NSW, six points to three in the under-15 men's 36kg division during the afternoon session.

Then, Launceston's Bailey Seabourne, who fights out of the Latrobe gym under state coach Craig Woods, won a tight three-round contest against Jaoby Stevens, of NSW, in the under-15 42kg division 37 points to 32 on countback after the judges had scored the fight at 12-all at the bell.

Earlier, talented Launceston boxer Luke Blackwell, of the Latrobe Boxing Club, was beaten 19 points to eight by Kaleb Kozac of Victoria in the youth 56kg weight division.

Later in the day, Joe Corner went down to Kori Fano of Western Australia 12 points to 10 in a tightly-contested bout.

In total, 26 Tasmanian hopefuls will be competing at this year's titles.
