Ray Phillips was found dead at the scene when emergency crews attended the York Town crash site just after 10am.
Sergeant Glenn Evans, of Beaconsfield police, said it was believed that Mr Phillips was an experienced recreational pilot and was alone when he took off from an airstrip on his property at Bowen Road, adjacent to his brother's vineyard.
``Police are still investigating the cause of the crash,'' Sergeant Evans said.
``There are a number of factors that we are following up as we speak.
``Obviously we'll consider the aeroplane and we'll consider the pilot himself.''
Sergeant Evans said weather conditions yesterday had been fine, still and clear.
``There is a witness to the crash - they're being spoken to at the moment.''
He said the fatality would be subject to a coronial inquest and the coroner had attended the scene yesterday.
Mr Phillips's family was not present at the time of the crash.
Crash investigators were still at the scene last night.
