Philip John Salter had terminal leukaemia when he was taken into custody for an alleged common assault on June 13, 2010.
Mr Salter had declined treatment for his cancer since March that year.
His condition declined rapidly after a fall at the remand centre on June 17, and he was bailed and taken to the Launceston General Hospital on June 18.
He died on hospital the next day.
Chris Dockray, counsel assisting coroner Tim Hill, said it was not alleged that prison officers or health staff had breached their duty of care to Mr Salter, or that anyone else had contributed to his death.
The inquest is expected to take two days.
