Detective Acting Inspector Stuart Wilkinson, of Tasmania Police, said this morning that evidence obtained from the investigation indicated that the fire was deliberately lit and that the investigation was continuing on that basis.
About 5pm yesterday, police and the Tasmania Fire Service were called to a report of a car fire at a home in Woniora Road, at Shorewell Park in Burnie.
Neighbours reported loud bangs and smoke coming from the property.
A car at the back of the house was fully engulfed by flames and was destroyed by the fire.
A 49-year-old man and two boys - one eight and one five - were all found at the scene suffering severe burns.
The three were taken to the North-West Regional Hospital at Burnie suffering burns to more than 25 per cent of their bodies.
Last night, both children were flown by air ambulance to the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne.
This morning, their conditions were listed as serious.
The father is being treated at the Royal Hobart Hospital and is in a critical condition.
