Full job description

Following an announcement by the Tasmanian Government, a Public Health Direction was issued on 10 September 2021 requiring that all Health Workers are vaccinated against COVID-19. This step is critical in protecting both our health workforce and vulnerable Tasmanians in our care.

The Department of Health seeks an experienced Registered Nurse Midwife to join our team based in Pool at the Launceston General Hospital (LGH) to deliver a high standard of patient centred care to our community.

The LGH is an accredited teaching hospital which provides inpatient and ambulatory services to Launceston and surrounding areas. Research and innovation is encouraged and supported throughout the hospital with research sponsored by the Clifford Craig Medical Trust.

The Registered Nurse Midwife will have knowledge, skills and experience that can be applied across a variety of areas including pre and post natal clinics and wards, birthing suite, paediatrics, and the neonatal nursery.

As a Registered Nurse Midwife you will strengthen health outcomes through the provision of safe, quality, clinically appropriate nursing care in partnership with patients/clients, their families and other health professionals.

Working as a midwife in Pool, successful applicants will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills, take on new challenges and contribute to our local community. They will be supported by our skilled and experienced senior midwifery team from the Maternity Unit as well as the Nurse Unit Manager and Associate Nurse Unit Managers based in Pool.

Details of Appointment:

Multiple Permanent, full time or part time , shift-worker (fully rotational) positions working between 40 and 76 hours per fortnight.

*Notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant

Salary: $66,421 to $91,807 per annum pro-rata + 10% superannuation + access to salary packaging

  • Access to the Grade 4 salary range $85,950 - $91,807 is subject to successful application for progression to Grade 4
  • Salary range is in accordance with Nurses and Midwives (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement 2019
  • Applicants should note that, for a period of six months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time and part time vacancies.


Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria:

  1. Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a Registered Nurse and as a Registered Midwife.

  2. Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:

  1. Conviction checks in the following areas:
  1. Crimes of violence
  2. sex related offences
  3. serious drug offences
  4. crimes involving dishonesty
  1. Identification check
  2. Disciplinary action in previous employment check.
