The Tasmanian Fire Service was called to the fire about 6.10pm on Tuesday.
Station manager Roger Whittle said firefighters were greeted with lots of smokes and flames as they approached the scene.
He said the man, Heath Lethborg, was near the vessel when they arrived.
In other news:
"We could even smell it at the fire station so we knew it was already going," Mr Whittle said.
"We noticed that the owner was on site and he had taken in a little bit of smoke inhalation so we were careful with him."
Mr Whittle said the smoke was a little bit toxic but the danger to the public wasn't too bad.
He said it took about 40 minutes for fire crews to get the fire under control.
"Most likely a battery short or electrical fault [started the fire]," Mr Whittle said.
"He was charging the batteries, disconnected the batteries and looked around and noticed the flames."
Mr Lethborg was taken to Launceston General Hospital and is said to be in a stable condition.
The boat was worth about $70,000.
