Parts of Tasmania are expected to reach their highest temperatures in years over the next 24 hours with storms and strong wind gusts expected in certain areas.
Acting Public Health director Scott McKeown said high temperatures could affect young people and the elderly more than others so it was important for people to keep in touch with older or sick relatives and friends.
He said all people should make sure they keep hydrated, minimise sun exposure, and avoid exercise outdoors during the hottest part of the day.
People with air conditioners are advised to use them or open doors and windows to catch the cooling breeze.
Children should not be left in cars alone under any circumstances and pets should be kept out of the sun with access to plenty of cool water.
If someone seems ill and affected by heat, advice should be sought from a health professional.
