The Seabourn Sojourn, a cruise ship measured at 198 metres, is the second vessel to be visiting the area in 2018.
The Sojourn is 56 metres longer than the L’Austral , a cruise ship that visited the region in January.
The cruises are part of the Community Asset Program, which has seen $4 million invested by Tasports in upgrades to Inspection Head Wharf.
Tasports acting chief executive Anthony Donald said that developing this sort of infrastructure at Beauty Point would promote the area as a tourism and cruise destination.
“TasPorts is providing incentives and benefits for Tasmania-focused cruising itineraries and expedition cruise visits,” Mr Donald said.
“With the aim of enhancing economic benefits around the state.”
Of the 778 passengers and crew aboard the Sojourn, 106 passengers booked on-shore tours around the valley.
Representatives from Tasports, Tourism Northern Tasmania and the West Tamar Council were on deck to see the vessel firsthand.
West Tamar mayor Christina Holmdahl said tourists aboard cruises were beginning to see the value the Tamar Valley had to offer.
“Most of the really big vessels visit Hobart,” she said.
“The smaller ones are catering to a different audience, a type of tourist that is interested in something new and unique.”
Cr Holmdahl said the cruise ships were a positive indicator of what’s in store for the area, including the Foreshore Master Plan.
“We’re excited by the proposal put forward in the Beauty Point Foreshore Master Plan and look forward to working with Tasports and Tourism Northern Tasmania further,” she said.
Tourism Northern Tasmania chief executive Chris Griffin said the visiting vessels have been great for businesses around the area.
“Cruises such as these are provide very large yield, generating revenue as well as popularity for the region through word of mouth that the Tamar Valley is great to visit,” he said.
Tasports, West Tamar Council and Tourism Northern Tasmania are looking to continue to work closely on the master plan to redevelop the Beauty Point area.
Funding is being sought from the government assist in future developments.
