Capable of charging the majority of electric vehicle batteries to 80 per cent within 30 minutes, the Tritium fast charger has been installed in Launceston's Paterson St East car park.
A slower, AC electric vehicle charger will also be installed in the car park as part of the $65,000 project.
Australian Electric Vehicle Association vice president Clive Attwater said the Paterson Street charger represented a significant step forward for the state’s burgeoning electric vehicle market.
“It will be beneficial for drivers of the vehicles, but it’s the beginning of a network,” he said.
“What really makes these effective is when drivers can go anywhere in the state and not have to worry about where they are going to charge their vehicles.
“I think we will see that start to happen in the next three years.”
