Both had penalty corner opportunities early, however neither was able to convert until West Devonport’s Ella Bishop scored a superb field goal to give the reigning premiers an early lead.

City created opportunities throughout the second quarter with an amazing save from Petria Button keeping the scores in West’s favour until minutes later when City’s Sophie Johnstone scored to equalise the game at half time.

The third quarter was all City Marians, as they harboured most of the attack; they had several penalty corner opportunities, but were unable to penetrate the strong West Devonport defence and goalkeeper Button.

In a back-and-forth last quarter, West Devonport started strong and had three shots on goal, but Marians’ goalkeeper Ash Murphy steadied her side and kept them in the contest. 

The game then swung, and the West defence rallied after some impressive attacking play from Marians and ensured the game ended at 1-all in regulation time.

As the deadlock was unable to be broken, the sides again went to an intense penalty shoot-out with several shots retaken due to goalkeeper infringements. 

West Devonport came away 3-2 winners, with captain Samantha Lawrence sealing the deal with a precise penalty stroke.

South Launceston put the finishing touches to a superb season and were named 2018 GNL Premiers,  accounting for Burnie Baptist 5-1.

South peppered the Baptist defence early and was rewarded by scoring in the opening minutes through a Sam Elliston-Buckley tap in from a penalty corner.

Minutes later Brad Buchanan gave the Suns a 2-0 advantage but Burnie Baptist shook off the early nerves to maintain the two-goal deficit at quarter time.

Baptist started the second quarter on the attack and Andrew Ollington scored from a goal mouth scramble to bring the score to 2-1.

Elliston-Buckley and Alastair McBain bounced back to end the second quarter on a high, both scoring from penalty corners to leave the score at 4-1 at half time.

Both sides were unable to hit the scoreboard and capitalise on their limited opportunities in a competitive, end-to-end styled third quarter, setting up an enthralling finish.

Baptist earned a penalty corner early in the last but were denied by Suns’ Coach McBain.

Kurt Budgeon was rewarded for his hard work with a late goal putting the result beyond doubt while Jake Wolfe and Braden Johnson were valiant in defeat for Baptist, alongside club stalwart Jarrod Poke.
