One of the best ways to experience Tasmania's natural beauty is with your own two feet and the Great Western Tiers is home to some of the best short walks in Tasmania.
If it is adventure you seek or a nice afternoon stroll, there is a walk to suit everyone with some of the most picturesque and ‘Instagramable’ spots as your back drop.
So grab your friends, family or beau and check out some of these short walk highlights.
Chasing Waterfalls
The Great Western Tiers is a treasure trove for waterfalls.
Liffey Falls
The 45 minute walk will take you past four main cascades, starting upstream with Alexandra Falls, then Hopetoun Falls, Albert Falls and Victoria Falls (the latter commonly known simply as "Liffey Falls"). Viewing platforms along the track provide great opportunities for photography
Montana Cascades
Montana Falls are on private property but the cascades can be viewed from 41 Degrees South Salmon Farm. There is a small fee to access the walking track.
Westmorland Falls
The track, which offers a moderate 2 hour return walk, is largely unknown, to be enjoyed by the mildly adventurous who don’t mind a little rough going at times. Unspoiled rainforest surrounds the high, magnificent cascade of Westmorland Falls, as well as a series of smaller cascades in the surrounding area.
Meander Falls
Winding its way through the gorgeous surrounds of the Meander Forest Reserve, the 4-6 hour walk will take you deep into the heart of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area under the Great Western Tiers.
Lobster Falls
A 2 hour return walk through forest to Lobster Falls lower cascade. The track follows a route high above the river before dropping down steeply to the river bank.
Take in views
Alum Cliffs (Tulampanga)
An enchanting short walk (about 40 minutes return) to a forest lookout perched high above the Mersey River. The view from the platform is breathtaking.
Devils Gullet
A short alpine walk (about 30 minutes return) to a stunning lookout platform overhanging a sheer cliff face
Quamby Bluff
A steep walk to the top of Quamby Bluff is rewarded with 360 degree panoramic views across the Great Western Tiers, as far as Launceston and Devonport on a clear day.
There are lots of walks, short and long that can be enjoyed in the Great Western Tiers area, more information can be found at: greatwesterntiers.net.au.
Always be prepared and ensure you are well equipped to take on your walk.
