Organisers are expecting a switched-on audience full of up to 400 farmers, educators, researchers, consultants, government staff and businesses, but they are particularly interested in the agricultural industry’s next generation.
The 2019 congress will be held at Launceston in March and the theme is Growing Agriculture @ 41 Degrees South.
Future leaders with an interest in farm management can apply for a $2500 bursary to attend the congress.
The bursary was established in honour of Professor John Alliston, who was a past president of the association and strong supporter of agricultural research and education.
Congress Organising Committee chairman David Armstrong said the event included a supplementary Next Gens program specially designed for up-and-coming farm managers and early career agricultural professionals.
“The IFMA congress will provide early career agricultural professionals with an opportunity to network, capacity build, grow confidence and gain technical skills through critical analysis and challenging thinking,” he said.
“There are a number of social events so delegates can meet others from around the world at a similar stage in their careers.
“It will also include sessions with international experts and opportunities to visit and meet leaders working in agricultural sectors in Northern Tasmania.”
The Next Gens program will be hosted by Adam Mostogl, who was recognised as one of the top 30 entrepreneurs in Australia aged under 30 in 2017.
Mr Mostogl was also named Tasmania’s Young Australian of the Year in 2015.
Young farm managers can apply to join the program, which runs on March 2 and 3, finishing just before the congress opening function.
They must be employed in a managerial capacity on a farm or in a business related to agriculture.
Only 35 delegates will be part of the Next Gens program.
“Recognising that our Next Gen participants are the future of the industry, this special program addition is designed to maximise [their] participation in the congress as well as build an international network that will stay with [them] for years to come,” Mr Armstrong said.
Northern Tasmanian Development Corporation is supporting the Next Gens program.
