The state government revealed the move in budget estimates this week.
It is expected the move will happen in early 2019, once the building’s redevelopment is complete.
In its new home, Service Tasmania will host new consultation booths, a concierge desk, self and assisted-service desks, and more.
There will be no job losses, and annual running costs are expected to be on par with those of Henty House. A final dollar figure for the move will be finalised in line with awarded tenders.
The building is expected to host 300 council-owned car parks, but further transport options are being considered, with the City of Launceston council’s free Tiger Bus service to make stops outside the site.
The $20 million redevelopment of C. H. Smith is being led by Launceston developer Errol Stewart, and welcomed its first tenant, Roberts Real Estate, in January.
It is pegged to be finished by the end of the year.
Premier Will Hodgman said the relocation of Service Tasmania to such a site meant that it would offer contemporary purpose-designed facilities, while remaining close to the central business district and other services such as the library, courts, and Tasmania Police.
“The C. H. Smith Building site has been vacant and derelict for decades and with the help of the Tasmanian government’s $60 million Northern Stimulus Package, the site has been adaptively redeveloped for commercial and community use while preserving heritage values,” Mr Hodgman said.
