Starting at 6.30pm, Large Lanterns at Seaport is designed to showcase the work of first year architecture and design students from the University of Tasmania.
About 60 students have constructed 14 lanterns using the theme of David Maynard’s 2010 photography book Beneath the Tamar.
Architecture and design lecturer Dr. Louise Wallis said the creations were more than just a visual spectacle.
“The students had the opportunity to provoke an experience through beauty, but they also had to make something that functioned,” she said.
“A lot of it has been about abstracting animals through a geometrical challenge.
“Hopefully, the lanterns remind people of how lovely the Tamar River can be.”
Wednesday’s event marks the culmination of more than a month’s work for the students, who have used hollow lenses and computer software to build the items.
The event will be held from 6.30pm at Seaport.
