More details have emerged about the single-car crash, which happened on Golconda Road at Lebrina on Saturday afternoon.
Attempts were made to revive the girl’s mother, 34, of Lilydale, however, Tasmania Police confirmed the woman died at the scene.
Inspector Gary Williams, who is in charge of the Northern District Support Services, said her daughter was “extremely lucky” she was not injured in the crash.
The girl was taken to the Launceston General Hospital after the crash.
He believed she has since returned to her family.
The identity of the woman would not be released until the next of kin had been notified, which was likely to be on Monday, Inspector Williams said.
A Tasmania Police investigation is ongoing.
The crash appeared to have been caused by “inexperience, inattention and not driving to conditions”, he said.
Inspector Williams urged people to slow down and take care while driving on roads that could be slippery during the wet weather over the next couple of days.
“Give yourself extra time - we want people to get home to their loved ones,” he said.
Emergency services were called to the crash about 4.30pm on Golconda Road.
“The car (a Mitsubishi van) was significantly damaged and is now in our custody and will be examined as part of our investigation,” Inspector Williams said.
The Lebrina crash was the third fatality in the past week across the state.
