More than 1200 people from 72 different teams are participating in the Cancer Council fundraiser at St Leonards, despite driving rain throughout the afternoon.
“Their attitude is that the people who have gone through cancer had it worse, so working in the rain is nothing compared to that,” Ms Tivan said.
Many participants in Saturday’s event walked around the track with sashes emblazoned with ‘carer’ and ‘survivor’, demonstrating how cancer had affected their lives.
“There’s 9 people everyday diagnosed and it affects everyone differently,” Ms Tivan said.
“For those people who have lost someone it’s very emotional, but those that have come through it it’s a very joyous occasion.”
Launceston’s relay is the sixth Tasmanian event this year, with fundraising efforts continuing all year round for those involved.
Organisers are hoping to raise about $180,000
“It really shows the dedication they have for the long haul,” Ms Tivan said.
About 26,500 people have participated in Tasmanian Relay For Life events since their inception in 2001, raising more than $4 million for cancer research.
