City of Launceston implemented the ban on residents’ Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) bins after the outbreak of fruit fly in Northern Tasmania.
The Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment has advised the council that FOGO bins provide little risk of fruit fly distribution.
While Launceston was not within the fruit fly inclusion zone, the council implemented the ban as a precautionary measure.
The council had told people to double bag fruit scraps and place them in the general waste.
