Inspector Debbie Williams said a man in his thirties died when his road motorcycle crashed into the fence of the Smithton Primary School on Grant Street at 3.07pm.
“The investigation is focusing on the police interaction with the motorcycle leading up to the crash,” she said.
“However, preliminary investigations indicate that there were no suggestions that the vehicle was being pursued or that there was any attempt to intercept the motorcycle prior to the crash.”
The man from Smithton was known to the police.
Inspector Williams said there were “a number of witnesses” to the crash but would not say if any were children.
“I would like to highlight that there is support for community members who feel that they need it through Road Trauma Support Tasmania,” she said.
The crash investigation will examine if speed, drugs, alcohol, weather, road conditions and other factors contributed to the crash.
“Crash investigators would like to hear from any witnesses to this crash and particularly anybody who might have dashcam footage prior to the incident. Anyone with information should call Burnie police on 131 444 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000,” Inspector Williams said.
There have been 10 road fatalities this year, with four involving motorcycles. There were five fatalities this time last year, all involving motorcycles.
Inspector Williams reminded drivers to be aware of motorcycles and for motorcyclists to protect themselves and others by riding responsibly with a roadworthy vehicle and protective clothing.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
