The Devonport Show will return in 2018 but it won’t be the same event that locals are familiar with.

The event will be one-day-only and won’t include some of the trimmings traditionally associated with the show, such as rides.
Animal judging, exhibitions and home industries competitions will instead take centre stage in what the Devonport Agricultural and Pastoral Society has branded an “agricultural event” rather than a “show”.
DAPS president MaryAnn Hortle said the idea was to return the event to its agricultural roots and distance it from the “show” label.
“A ‘show’ to a lot of people means sideshow alley,” Mrs Hortle said.
“We really want to bring the focus on agriculture and activities within that umbrella.”
The Devonport Show was cancelled in 2017 because of mounting operational costs and concerns about the financial stability of DAPS.
The Royal Launceston Show was also cancelled last year amid mounting concern about the long-term future of agricultural shows across Tasmania.
Mrs Hortle said DAPS was still committed to holding an annual event just with a new format.
She said other elements could added to the 2018 event now that the agricultural focus had been agreed upon during a DAPS meeting on Wednesday.
The event is set to be held Friday November 30, a public holiday in Devonport, and will have free entry at this stage.
Devonport’s acting mayor Annette Rockliff said she wished DAPS “every success” with their new format event.
“I certainly congratulate them on working hard on rethinking it and coming up with a good plan to try it,” she said.
Alderman Rockliff said Devonport City Council supported DAPS with a range of rebates and financial support.
“Obviously a show brings people from outside the community into the city, so we’re always supportive of shows and that sort of thing,” she said.
