Plans to convert Calstock into boutique accommodation were submitted by the mansion’s owners to the Meander Valley Council this month.
The 10-bedroom Georgian mansion will provide accommodation for 14 guests, over six units, on the east and west wings of the 80-hectare property.
Included in the development application is an intention to serve breakfast to residents, in addition to hosting formal high teas and hospitality events.
A 16-space car park will also be made available for patrons.
“We have been approached by residential aged-care facilities to host visits at Calstock at which we would provide morning and afternoon tea,” co-owner Bronwyn Shakespear said.
“Most recently we have also been asked by the Deloraine [RSL sub-branch] to provide hospitality at Calstock to Her Excellency, the Governor of Tasmania, [Professor Kate Warner] on ANZAC day.”
Calstock was purchased in September by Terence Fahey and Ms Shakespear for $3.15 million, after going on the market in 2016.
The property was historically a racehorse breeding stud, with two 19th century Melbourne Cup-winning horses – Malua in 1879 and Sheet Anchor in 1880 – bred on its grounds.
In 2006, it was briefly converted into a Peppers branded hotel after former owners Remi and Ginette Bancal spent $2 million restoring the property.
However, the project was abandoned and Calstock once again became a private residence.
In 2016, Landmark real estate agent John Hewitt called it “the best Georgian house in Tasmania”.
Meander Valley mayor Craig Perkins said the potential development was a positive sign for the municipality.
“Calstock has previously been used for tourist accomodation and continuing to provide a high quality tourism experience in the Meander Valley area is something that is welcome,” he said.
“It is pleasing to see Bronwyn and Terrence have confidence to invest on the back of Tassie’s growing tourist industry.”
Mr Fahey and Ms Shakespear would continue to live at the property under the current plans in the property’s main residence.
