The Bureau of Meteorology issues the severe weather alert on Sunday, and the alert was updated on Monday morning.
The bureau of warning of damaging northwesterly winds that could reach gusts of 100 to 120km/h in exposed sites across the state.
The winds, brought in by a vigorous cold front, will hit areas including Launceston, Devonport, Burnie, St Helens, and Swansea.
Overnight to Monday, Maatsuyker Island recorded gusts of 156km/h, Hobart 94km/h, while Launceston was still experiencing gusts of 59km/h at 8.30am on Monday.
Launceston’s gusts peaked on Monday at 91km/h.
By 11am, the bureau forecast that the winds would ease by early afternoon, leaving the state by the late afternoon.
The winds have wreaked havoc across the state, with Tasmania Police advising of several trees down over roads.
Police have urged drivers to slow down, turn on their headlines, and be on the lookout for traffic hazards.
While the weather alert remains, the State Emergency Service advises that people should:
- Supervise children closely.
- Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
- Manage pets and livestock.
- Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
- Be prepared in case of power outages.
- Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
- Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.
