Former Melbourne skipper Garry Lyon and Essendon great Tim Watson used their SEN Breakfast show to present Richardson as the ideal candidate to lead the push for any potential future bid for a Tasmanian AFL side.
“The push for Tasmanian football is in desperate need of a figure head,” Lyon said.
“There are few more charismatic people in football than Matthew Richardson, his bona fides are beyond dispute and he is the face of Tasmanian football.”
Watson added: “If he really believes that, he’s got to lead the charge. He’s got to get out the front, he’s got to mobilise the Tasmanians out there and he has to be at the forefront.”
Meanwhile, AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan used his speech at the AFL season launch on Wednesday to tell the football world that the league was not “ignoring Tasmania”.
“But I promise you, the AFL will not forget or abandon one of our founding states,’’ he said.
“Football is about a sense of belonging and connection and we will work with all of Tasmania and its fans to ensure that happens."
