Gun Laws
I HAVE to add my voice of concern regarding the Liberal government's proposed changes to the gun laws that would give farmers and sporting shooters greater access to Category C weapons including pump action shotguns, self-loading rifles and, of all things, silencers.

The government certainly has no mandate for these proposed changes.
Farmers, in particular, often living in rather isolated areas would be an easy target for those with evil intentions to get their hands on such destructive weapons.
As for sporting shooters, they already have a big enough advantage over their unsuspecting targets with the guns they have now.

Defence of Letters to Editor
IN DEFENCE of my fellow Letters to the Editor comrades, it was with major disappointment that I heard Senator Eric Abetz on the ABC radio state election coverage last Saturday night, unnecessarily stereotype and dismiss contributors to this section of the newspaper as “political activists”.
It may have been remiss of the aforementioned senator, that not all letters are of a political nature, and if so, a minor contributor to democracy and free speech, but most importantly, contribute to the fabric and inclusiveness of being part of a community.
If some members of society require an outcome that aligns with their subjectivity and prejudice, paid advertising is an alternative, either being paid by the proponents or their beneficiaries.

Cats - North East Animal Sanctuary
IN REGARDS the letter to the editor from Elsa de Ruyter, St Helens, stating “kittens become full grown breeding cats without any laws regarding desexing and confinement”.
It is people like this, uneducated and uninformed, that cause others to dump cats and cause the very problem that she is so very publicly trying to stop.
As for no laws surrounding cats, I can assure you there are.
All North East Animal Sanctuary cats are desexed before going to there new some.
It is the law.
So instead of attacking, I suggest you spend more time finding out the facts and law before publicly attacking something you obviously have no idea about.

Please Retain State Tally Room
WITH TASMANIA being the only state to have retained its public tally room for last Saturday’s election, it would be a travesty of justice to deny the Tasmanian people the ability to witness democracy at work.
To enable voters and their families in some instances, to witness the ABC’s coverage with Antony Green’s cogent analysis, amongst other media organisations, plus the end of night speeches by the three major party’s leaders, accompanied by supporter metronomic applause at every pause, somewhat similar to a Pentecostal crusade, it made a night not to be missed, with the bonus of a great educational experience.

Political Slur
FOR TASMANIAN Greens leader Cassy O'Connor to suggest the recent state election was bought by the Liberals is both absurd and downright insulting to all Tasmanian voters.
May I say, we are not stupid Ms O'Connor, Tasmanian voters were not duped by any political advertising (in fact it is a waste of time and money) for it is policies and a proven track record that voters take into account at election time.
By the way, with the Greens now under three sitting members (possibly only one) does that constitute a political party or are the Greens now considered debunked?

Poor Driving
UNFORTUNATELY we cannot force motorists to concentrate while driving.
From what I have seen as a cyclist, It is only a matter of time, before the 1.5 metre minimum passing distance law will result in a head-on collision between motor vehicles.
Maybe we should make learner drivers watch videos that portray the daily struggles of car accident victims.

Election promises
OK THE the Liberals are back in - how long will we have to wait for federal government to honour Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s promise of funds to fix the problem with the Tamar River and our outdated sewage system?
Deb Baker, West Launceston.
Old Saying
DOES ANYBODY remember the saying:
“When you point your finger at someone else, there are three fingers pointing back at you”?
A pearl of wisdom indeed.
Elsa de Ruyter, St Helens.
No Change
NOTHING CHANGES very much does it?
AFLW umpires and match review decisions are just as biased against Collingwood players as what AFL umpires have been for years.
Mick Leppard, Invermay.
Democracy
DEMOCRACY is defined as “government by the whole population”.
In no way does this definition refer to a government that makes transactions in order to retain power over the whole population.

Australia Day
IF I WAS prime minister I’d change the date we celebrate Australia Day and remove the Union Jack from our flag.
Both out of respect for the Indigenous people.
