Tasmanian Liberal senator David Bushby visited the island to announce the project, with $365,000 in funding made possible through the Federal Government’s Regional Jobs and Investment Package.
The funding will help the community to secure a building to repurpose for the project.
“Currently, no such community or hospitality facility exists in the Northern half of Flinders Island,” Senator Bushby said.
“This project will not only be a major boost to the local economy but will also make a significant contribution to the visitor economy and the community.
“One a recent visit with Senator Jonathon Duniam, I visited Killiecrankie where this project was brought to our attention as a key component of the Flinders Island destination action plan.
“It was clear that there is a gaping hole in this sort of tourism offering in the Northern part of Flinders Island,” he said.
The third priority in the destination action plan aimed to see a cafe in the North of Flinders Island, alongside other projects such as the development of an island hub and a welcome service at the airport.
Killiecrankie resident and project proponent Ian James said the announcement was very exciting for the island’s community.
“With funding now secured we are able to actively search for an appropriate site which the community will then purchase to establish the cafe and community centre,” Mr James said.
“It is our intention to also build a small accommodation unit which will be used by the operator of the cafe.
“One of the difficulties has been attracting potential cafe operators to our beautiful part of the world.
“This grant will go a long way toward overcoming this difficulty in further enhancing the community facilities and visitor infrastructure on the island.
“Without this assistance, our project was looking increasingly unlikely to succeed in the near future.
Senator Bushby said he was “delighted” about the development of the island.
