In January 2017 a 22-year-old Launceston man was killed at the lake in a jetski accident.
The lake already has marked buoy line limiting water craft use, but Bass Liberal MHA Sarah Courtney said there needed to be better signage and clarity around the use of each area to improve safety.
“Such a delineation would ensure that swimmers, such as young children, are kept separate from water craft that may be motorised and will give caregivers peace of mind,” she said.
“The area could also include a swimming platform or similar.”
Northern Aquatic Club vice president Damian Causby said the lake area was underutilised by the community, partly due to the lack of clear information about parking for power boats and kayaks, and safe swimming locations.
Three different parking areas often caused confusion, he said, as people weren’t sure where best to park to take their water craft down to the lake’s shore.
The club wanted to ensure the lake was easily accessible and safe for all users.
Ms Courtney said the lake complemented the family-friendly facilities at Cataract Gorge, particularly during summer, and better safety signage and information on the different areas of the lake for water craft and swimming was needed.
