Nurses, tradies, office workers and even retired grandparents dropped their strides at Nobbys beach on Sunday to run in Newcastle’s Cupid Undie Run.

About 100 participants dared to bare in the annual 2km fun run, which was held at 17 locations around the country.
The nation-wide event is on every Valentine’s Day weekend and raises money for the Children’s Tumour Foundation of Australia – who support people affected by Neurofibromatosis (NF).
Those diagnosed are faced with extremely limited treatment options as there is no known cure for the NF group of disorders. It’s estimated over 10000 Australians live with a form of NF.
“It’s a condition where people get tumours and they can cause deformities,” race director Gabrielle Lawrie said. “That’s why we run in our undies – to see what it can be like to feel uncomfortable in public and give the kids a laugh that come along.”
Ms Lawrie said the Hunter run was expecting to raise over $15000 which will go towards the foundation’s critical NF research.
Belmont man, Jeff Pond, was first across the line in what was only a 2km fun run, but was more than happy to get his kit off to support NF.
“I’m a marathon runner, but when I saw the event pop up, how could you not support such a worthy cause,” he said.
“I believe in supporting community stuff that we do locally, but bigger things as well because it’s so valuable for everyone involved.”
