The change would be made to prepare for the expected increase in traffic associated with the new Western Access Road.
The current 50km/h zone would be extended from South Street to the west of Maxwell Street.
The change would increase safety for residents and pedestrians, especially the area between the Bridport Golf Club entrance and Walter Street, the council said.
