About four months ago, RSPCA Tasmania interim chief executive Andrew Byrne adopted a cat named Brutus from the Launceston Animal Care Centre.
He said the decision changed his life.
“For a person like me who lives alone, Brutus is my best love and certainly my life wouldn’t be the same without him,” he said.
“Despite his name, he is incredibley loyal and loving.
“The wonderful thing about pets is they love you unconditionally, as long as you are kind to them and feed them.
“But they are incredibly forgiving.”

Dr Byrne said pets can play a very important role in a person’s life, especially those who live alone.
“There is nothing worse than feeling lonely,” he said.
“When you have a pet, they go a long way in alleviating those feelings.
“They are always there for you.”
The Launceston Animal Care Centre currently have a eight rabbits, 30 cats and 10 dogs available for adoption.
Dr Byrne said depending on a person’s needs, there was a personality for everyone.
“Rabbits make a trendy suburban pet because they are relatively easy to look after,” he said.
“So whether you want a cat to sit on your lap while you watch television, or a rabbit to hop around your apartment, or a dog to throw a ball with.
“As long as you love them, they will love you in return.”
