The upgrade to Evandale Road between Launceston Airport and Breadalbane is part of a $60m community roads package announced on Sunday.
Labor Leader Rebecca White said the improvement would boost safety for airport traffic and enhance the attractiveness of the ‘Launceston gateway’.
However, Liberal Infrastructure Minister Rene Hidding said Labor stole its policy.
The Liberals state road upgrade policy for the North was announced earlier in the year. It included a $5.5 million pledge for the duplication of the road from the airport to Breadalbane.
“Labor’s belated announcement today is better late than never,” Mr Hidding said on Sunday.
Labor’s roads package also included $2.5 million upgrades to the West Tamar Highway between Craythorne Road and Atkinsons Road, and installing overtaking opportunities between Exeter and the Batman Highway junction.
White said Labor had been consulting with community groups, local councils and the RACT in order to prioritise where funding should be allocated.
A pedestrian underpass for Campbell Town has received a $1.9m pledge while a stretch of Highland Lakes Road between Melton Mowbray and Bothwell has been earmarked $2.2m.
The West Tamar Highway received three funding pledges including a $4 million promise to reconstruct and widen the road between Gravelly Beach intersection and Rosevears Drive, and a pledge of $1m to reseal and widen the road to the north of the Batman Highway intersection to Lightwood Hills Road.
