Those who are disenchanted with politicians are the ones who listen to candidates talk, but can only hear pork barrelling and empty promises.
Even the most well-thought out policy or commitment would be met with a roll of the eyes or a “I’ll believe it when I see it”. For some that disillusionment runs so deep that even the genuine achievements and efforts fail to be acknowledged.
A 33-day election can feel like years. It can be a confusing mix of policies, pledges and party politics.
The Examiner is committed to explaining the issues beyond the “political spin” with the goal to engage with the North about the election. For this election we have enlisted the help of three political experts to analyse the key policies and moments during the campaign. The experts are leading economist Saul Eslake, political scientist Kate Crowley and veteran political reporter Barry Prismall.
Our very own brains trust will offer our readers an insight into the policies and offer insights so that our readers can have a comprehensive understanding beyond political rhetoric.
The Examiner will host one of only two debates between the two people who can be premier of Tasmania following the March 3 poll. The first debate will be held on February 13 in Burnie. The Examiner’s debate will be held on February 20 in Launceston.
The exclusive debates are more than just the leaders of the two parties to offer a sales pitch. It will be an opportunity to get the heart of issues that matter to our region.
So we are asking our readers to engage with the election by submitting questions for Premier Will Hodgman and Opposition Leader Rebecca White.
This is an opportunity to clarify the changes you want to see in our community and address issues that you are passionate about. It’s also a chance to ask questions of the person who will be premier of our state for the next four years.
We directly hear of issues that affect our community daily, we know that our readers are passionate about issues that affect them and their neighbours.
This debate platform is your chance to bring that passion before our political leaders, our next potential premier. Now is your chance to be heard – do not fall silent.
