The 2018 Magic Millions Tasmanian yearling sale will present the cream of the latest yearling crop with 137 youngsters to go under the hammer from 12pm at the Inveresk Showgrounds on Thursday, February 15.
Yearlings by no fewer than 52 individual sires will be offered including mainlanders Written Tycoon, Charge Forward, Fighting Sun, Husson, Magnus, Sizzling, Stratum, Wandjina and Dawn Approach.
Local sires represented by strong drafts include Doomben Cup winner Mawingo, Encosta de Lago’s group winning son Needs Further, Black ‘n’ Tough’s sire Tough Speed and Gee Gee Horse Stud’s champion resident Wordsmith.
Much excitement will surround the progeny of eight first season sires – Cluster, Puissance de Lune, Rubick, Sidestep, Time for War, Toronado, Wandjina and Warhorse.
Former New Zealand Horse of the Year Dundeel was recently represented by his first winner with Cutadeel and Grenville Stud have the full brother preparing for the 2018 Tasmanian Yearling Sale – the bay colt is Lot 36 in the catalogue.
This year’s crop will be out to emulate the likes of Palentino, The Cleaner, Kenjorwood, Dandy Gent, Like a Carousel, Hot Dipped, Pateena Arena, Genuine Lad, Jerilderie Letter, Inner Warrior and Triple Asset who were all sold in Launceston before starring on the track.
Over the past two years the Tasmanian Yearling Sale has reached new heights – each time grossing over $2 million.
This year’s line up is outstanding and includes (at least half) relations to stakes winners including Genuine Lad, Up Cups, Cellarman, Zabbaye, Jerilderie Letter, Lucky Year, Cellargirl, Radha Rani, and Tough Chik.
There are also close relations to other former star sale graduates Ollie’s Gold, Lady Lynette, Lake Sententia and Braequest among the yearlings on offer.
Stakes winning mares Abbadena, Amphritite, Genuine Blonde, Honey Flower, Joey Jo Jo, Petite Oiseau, Star Hit, Taste’s Sis, Testamarriage, Throne Inn and Vivre La Nett all have progeny catalogued this month.
All of Tasmania’s leading breeders and vendors have progeny to go under the hammer with Alva Stud (7 lots), Armidale Stud (40), Brooklyn Park (12), Grenville Stud (28), Motree Thoroughbreds (10), Twelve Oaks Thoroughbreds (4) and Waterford Livestock (7) the most represented.
The scene will be set for the Tasmanian yearling sale with the Magic Millions race night held on Wednesday, February 14.
This year’s $50,000 2YO Classic will be joined by a $10,000 TasRacing racing women’s bonus for the first all female owned runner past the post.
