The email-based scam has surfaced over the past few weeks, with businesses asked to pay their invoices into a different bank account.
Tasmania Police has warned local businesses that the emails look “very convincing” and may refer to actual work or invoice numbers.
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF:
- Keep anti-virus software and security update patching up-to-date.
- Regularly back up your data.
- Use complex passwords that can’t be easily guessed.
- Do your own research to validate who you’re dealing with.
- Use a two-step authorisation process for payments.
“They may also include the name of the supplier, logos, links to websites, and appear to have the same email address,” they said.
“Protecting your business from cyber-attacks is a matter of having a cybersecurity strategy in place from the start, which is far easier than trying to repair the damage after it happens.”
Last year, more than 51,000 reports were made to Scamwatch in Australia, with nearly $37 million lost to online scams.
Report cyber attacks to your bank as well as online at www.scamwatch.gov.au or www.acorn.gov.au.
