The Tasmania Fire Service responded to a vegetation fire on Henry Street about 3.30pm.
It is believed a bird flew into an overhead power line, sparking a small blaze which was quickly contained.
A TasNetworks spokesperson said it was likely the bird flew into the power line, damaging the insulator.
About 873 customers were without power at East Launceston, Invermay, Launceston, Mowbray and Ravenswood.
Some customers at Ravenswood were still without power as of 5.30pm.
