The dive and family fun day is held in memory of Phil Malkin, a dive controller and teacher, who lost his battle against acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Mr Malkin’s last wish was to hold an event to thank the Leukemia Foundation for their support.
Phil’s Dive for a Cause has now gone on to become the largest community effort for the Leukemia Foundation in Tasmania.
Event organiser Tach Malkin said they expect between 150 to 200 people to join in on the day, as well as 30 to 40 divers.
“We would love the local community to get behind this event in memory of a gentle man who has been diving and teaching others to dive in Bicheno for over 20 years,” Ms Malkin said.
“The dive will be lead by Charlea and Beau, our children, to continue his legacy as Phil was a dive controller and taught many divers in his time at Bicheno Dive Centre.
“Phil’s Dive for a Cure has now raised over $75,000 over two events in what has been to date the largest ever community effort for the Leukemia Foundation in Tasmania,” she said. “100 per cent of the money has gone towards funding promising blood cancer research.”
The free family fun day will include a barbecue, coffee, a silent auction, raffles, kids games, volleyball and more.
Phil’s Dive will take place at Waubs Bay in Bicheno. Divers are to check in at 8.30am, and the family fun day set to begin at 10am.
Registration for the dive is $30, and the paddle and swim is $5.
