Elvis Smylie ripped up the fast Riverside course late on the opening day to hold a one-shot lead.
The 15-year-old had shot rounds of 69 and 66 to spoil fellow Gold Coast rival Lewis Hoath’s fast start.
Hoath, the favoured title contender, continued his recent vein of hot form since his Tamar Valley Junior Cup win just days ago.
He carded a day-best 65 to lead after the first round before slipping with a 71.
Deloraine’s Jack Blair has moved into early contention, taking a share of fourth place.
Blair followed up a morning 73 with a late 68 round.
Victorian Jasper Stubbs is also five shots behind with a 67 and a 74.
Prospect Vale golfer Ryan Thomas is well within touch of the leaderboard, shooting back-to-back 71 rounds.
Ashleigh Hall heads out the best women’s masters chances, the Victorian collecting a 76 and a 73 to lead comfortably by three shots.
Sheradyn Johnson recovered from a 79, carding a 73 in the second round to tie for second with Yerin Kim after her two rounds of 73.
Queenslander Lion Higo (74 and 80) and South Australian Charley Jacobs (75 and 79) are both a further two strokes behind.
Tasmanian Mackenzie Wilson is the best of the homegrown players.
The Hobart golfer finished with rounds of 80 and 77 and sits eight shots behind Hall in equal seventh.
The Tasmanian Junior Masters continues on Friday.
