The council work will include the installation of a raised pedestrian crossing and is expected to be completed within four weeks, weather permitting.
Motorists should expect short delays and restrictions to some on-street parking spaces in between Howick and Frankland streets while the works are completed.
The roundabout removal is only temporary and will be back once the junction works are completed.
The new roundabout and road surface will be at a slightly higher level to assist in slowing traffic before the pedestrian crossing locations.
During this time normal junction road rules apply, with Charles Street having priority.
Give way signs are in place on Frankland Street.
Once works are complete, installation of the pedestrian crossing at the LGH entrance will commence.
These works are followed by the new roundabout installation and an asphalt road.
Initial works for the reconstruction of Cimitiere Street, between Tamar Street and Lawrence Street also began on Monday, with major works to comment in late February.
The project will involve the reconstruction of the road to contemporary standards and will necessitate detours and alternate accesses to some businesses.
The City of Launceston said it will provide more details on likely disruptions before work gets underway.
The council asked the public for patience as the upgrades continue.
