The North of the state can expect high temperatures lasting through to next week, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Launceston is forecast to reach a top of 30 on Thursday and 35 on Friday.

With school holidays in full swing and outdoor summer activities and festivities underway, the Cancer Council Australia said people’s skin will be at risk of damage and sunburn.

“In the current UV conditions, it can take as little as 15 minutes to start burning,” the council’s public health committee chairman Craig Sinclair said. 

“That’s why Australians need to be prepared before they head outdoors. Make sure you apply sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside and wear covering protective clothing for your best chance of reducing sun damage. This should include a broad-brim hat and if you are swimming – a protective rashie. 

“With UV at extreme levels, it’s really crucial to seek shade as well – be prepared by taking an umbrella or beach tent out with you and taking cover throughout the day. You can also help protect your family by planning outdoor activities for the beginning and end of the day to avoid peak UV.”

Mr Sinclair said, given the intensity of the UV this time of year, it was “very likely” people would get sunburnt if they didn’t take adequate precautions.

Temperatures are expected to ease on Saturday, according to the bureau. However, the day is still predicted to be a hot one, with Launceston forecast to reach 28 with an “extreme” UV level.

Sunday is expected to reach a top of 27 degrees.
