The Sandford 23-year-old was pushed all the way by under-21 state titleholder Rudy Davis, of Clifton Beach, with a powerful display of performance surfing.
All three judges awarded victory to Renwick by less than .5 of a point in the final, while East Coast surfer Tom Gray and Devonport’s Shae Cadle finished third and fourth, respectively.
Davis claimed won the under-21 final from Penguin rival Liam Viney and Devonport duo Cadle and Tom Roberts.
Clifton Beach’s Bella Goward held off an improving Luca Brodribb in both the under-21 and open women’s finals. Scamander’s Damon Hodge took out the over-30 and over-40 double with former national finalist Scott Weinreich reclaiming his over-50 crown.
The classic was the opening round one of the state championship series, which shifts to Bruny Island next month for round two of the state junior and open longboard titles.
