Thomas carded a one-under 70 on Sunday to start the 72-hole Order of Merit Australian Golf-sanctioned event, with Qeensland’s Elvis Smylie one stroke behind heading into the penultimate day.
Further back in the field of 40 is Hobart’s Joey Bower (73), Royal Queensland’s Bailey Callander, Victorian Jasper Stubbs and Queenslander Alexander Whiteley (all on 74).
South Australia’s Caitlin Peirce is leading the girls after the first round with a 72-storke performance.
Victoria’s Sheradyn Johnson is one stroke behind, while the best-placed Tasmanian is Hallie Meaburn, of Royal Hobart, who shot a disappointing 82 to be 10 shots behind with three rounds to play.
Monday will see players take to the course for the second and third rounds, with the final round of 18 holes to be contested on Tuesday.
The tournament is for both under-17 boys and girls from all over Australia.
